The back line is starting to take shape as Monterey Bay FC deal with veteran defenders. | News

The Monterey Bay FC roster continues to take shape heading into the 2022 USL Championship campaign.

The team inked their first defenders, signing centre-back Hugh Roberts on Tuesday after agreeing a deal with full-back Morey Doner on Friday.

Roberts is a league veteran, ranking third all-time in minutes played, spanning 203 regular season appearances in nine seasons. He has spent the last three years with Charlotte Independence SC and has been responsible for 71 blocks in 78 matches.

MBFC head coach Frank Yallop expects him to provide a steady influence on a back line that will have little practice playing together at the start of the team’s inaugural season.

“I’m really excited to be here, honestly,” Roberts said in a statement after signing. “It’s my first time to the West Coast, but on top of that it’s great to play under Frank.”

Doner Morey

Doner has spent the past three seasons in the Canadian Premier League, coming to Monterey Bay from HFX Wanderers. Prior to his time in Canada, Doner was team captain for Aurora FC.

“Morey is an exciting, quick right-back who adds to the attack while also being a good one-on-one defender,” Yallop said.

He is expected to create counter-attacking opportunities and set the pace for defense
